Gingivitis Q & A

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is a gum disease that causes the part of your gums that surround the base of your teeth to become inflamed and irritated.

Gingivitis is very treatable, but it’s important you act on treatment quickly. If left unchecked, gingivitis will develop into a more severe gum disease called periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss.

Some of the most common symptoms of gingivitis include:

  • Red gums
  • Bleeding when you floss
  • Gum swelling
  • Gum recession
  • Gum tenderness
  • Bad breath

If you notice any of these symptoms in your mouth, don’t hesitate to schedule your appointment at Leesville Dental Studio. The team offers thorough, comfortable gingivitis care to reverse the disease and to protect your overall oral health.

What causes gingivitis?

Gingivitis is generally caused by poor oral hygiene, which allows plaque to build up on your teeth. The bacteria in plaque create toxins that irritate and inflame your gums. Brushing and flossing on a daily basis prevents the buildup of plaque, protecting your gums.

In addition to insufficient oral hygiene, some other causes of gingivitis include:

  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Smoking
  • Certain medications
  • Hormone changes
  • Dry mouth
  • Stress

Gingivitis also gets more common as you age.

How is gingivitis treated?

Leesville Dental Studio offers gingivitis treatment. The first step is a process called scaling and root planing — a thorough teeth cleaning that removes any traces of plaque and bacteria from your teeth. This includes cleaning the area of your tooth that’s below the surface of your gums.

But don’t worry. They don’t use painful metal tools for this process. Instead, they use an air polisher to achieve the desired results with minimal discomfort to you.

This airflow-based tooth polisher is designed for easy insertion into the pockets between your gums and your teeth. Then, it uses a warm and gentle airflow paired with a fine powder to remove plaque. Leesville Dental Studio also uses ARESTIN®, an antibiotic they place below your gum line to treat gum disease.

After your scaling and root planing, it’s important that you continue proper oral care at home to keep your teeth clean so your gums have the opportunity to heal. Leesville Dental Studio can repeat the scaling and root planing process as needed to fully restore your gum health.
